/decapoda queen

Created as my Senior-Year project in the Undergraduate (BFA) program for Visual Effects at SCAD.

A queen from an alien race is disturbed from her sleep and wakes up to protect her territory.

The Decapoda Queen sleeps in her cave when a sudden noise wakes her up. She looks for the origin of the noise and runs towards it. When the Queen reaches the entrance of the cave she realizes that the intruder is the camera (the audience) and attacks it.

The project went through all the production and post-production process at the SCAD facilities in Savannah, Georgia for approximately six months. The Concept drawings were done in Photoshop. ZBrush was used to Sculpt and Texture the Character and the Environment. Autodesk Maya for Lighting, Shading, Rendering and Animation. Mari was used to Improve the textures. Compositing was done using Nuke. The sound and voice over were done in a small studio set up by the Sound Supervisor.

The project was heavily influenced by the art style of Blizzard cinematics. The concept and design was based on video games characters and science fiction stories.

The project was focused on being photorealistic and this aspect brought several challenges that were highly satisfied during the production of the film. Most of the crew were learning to work in a collaborative environment, hence some issues were found during the work, but all of them were solved with no major repercussions for the final piece.
